Surgery remains the mainstay treatment, but it comes with serious risks. A complication known as an <strong>anastomotic leak<\/strong> occurs in up to <strong>20% of procedures<\/strong>, leading to higher mortality, cancer recurrence, and long hospital stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>SMARTHEAL project<\/strong>, funded by the <strong>European Innovation Council (EIC)<\/strong>, is changing that. In collaboration with <strong>Trinity College Dublin<\/strong>, <strong>Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia<\/strong>, <strong>Plio Surgical<\/strong>, and <strong>Amsterdam UMC<\/strong>, the project is developing a <strong>next-gen smart magnetic implant<\/strong> capable of <strong>sensing and healing<\/strong> \u2014 a true breakthrough in post-surgical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <strong>PhD position<\/strong> is central to SMARTHEAL\u2019s mission. You will explore <strong>wound healing, tissue response, immune signaling, and the microbiome<\/strong> using advanced techniques like <strong>single-cell transcriptomics, mass cytometry, and in silico modeling<\/strong>, with access to Amsterdam UMC\u2019s top-tier imaging and omics platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83e\uddea Your Role as a PhD Candidate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of a multidisciplinary international team, your responsibilities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leading experimental studies on <strong>intestinal wound healing<\/strong> and <strong>immune responses<\/strong> using animal and human tissue<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applying <strong>bioinformatics tools<\/strong> and omics integration (RNA-seq, spatial technologies, etc.)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performing statistical analysis using R or similar tools<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributing to <strong>biomarker discovery<\/strong> for inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer recurrence<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing and publishing scientific papers as part of your <strong>PhD trajectory<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting educational and training initiatives for students and research trainees<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be based in the <strong>Dept. of Pediatric Surgery<\/strong> and the <strong>Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Disease<\/strong>, two pioneering units in <strong>translational medical science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83e\uddec Candidate Profile<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re looking for a motivated, collaborative scientist who is ready to grow.
