🧬 About the Project
This UKRI-BBSRC Mission Award-funded initiative is focused on developing genetically enhanced strains of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF). BSFs are rapidly becoming vital in sustainable agriculture due to their ability to upcycle organic waste and serve as a low-carbon protein source. However, wildtype BSF strains have limitations. This project aims to introduce desirable traits using gene editing and transgenesis to unlock their full potential.
You’ll be working under the guidance of Professor Luke Alphey, a world leader in insect synthetic biology and co-founder of Oxitec, the company behind the world’s first engineered mosquito releases. This role is part of a collaborative project with Professor Neil Bruce’s group at the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP).
🔍 Key Responsibilities
As part of the Alphey Lab, your role will focus on:
- 🧬 Developing and testing gene drive components in Anopheles stephensi
- 🐛 Rearing and maintaining insect colonies
- 🔬 Phenotypic and genetic analysis of transgenic/gene-edited strains
- 🧪 Molecular biology tasks, including plasmid design and DNA prep
- 📊 Designing experiments and analyzing data statistically
- 📝 Contributing to scientific publications and progress reports
- 🧑🏫 Assisting in training and supervising students or other team members
🎓 Qualifications & Skills
Grade 5 (Technician)
- HNC, HND, or undergraduate degree in biology or related field
- Or equivalent practical laboratory experience
Grade 6 (Technical Specialist)
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent relevant experience
Core Skills:
- Expertise in insect synthetic biology, gene editing, or molecular biology
- Detail-oriented and capable of performing complex lab tasks to high standards
- Strong team collaboration and communication skills
- Independent, reliable, and proactive in problem-solving
