🧬 About the PhD Project

Title: Mutation Clusters and Origin of Regulatory RNA Genes
Lead Researcher: Dr. Heli Mönttinen
Location: Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki

In this cutting-edge project funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation, you’ll explore both recent and ancient mutation events in human regulatory RNA gene regions. Your work will uncover the evolutionary history and functional impact of these mutations using genome-wide sequence analysis, comparative genomics, and custom programming tools.

✅ You will:

  • Screen large genomic datasets
  • Analyze mutations with existing & newly developed methods
  • Publish your findings as first author in scientific journals
  • Collaborate with an expert, supportive team

🎓 Who Should Apply?

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, or a related field
  • Proven programming skills (preferably in Python, other languages welcome)
  • Solid background in biology and strong interest in molecular evolution
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Team player with independent working skills

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have!):

  • Strong statistical knowledge
  • Experience with large datasets and HPC environments
  • Previous work in RNA biology or comparative genomics

📅 Position Details

  • Type: Full-time, 3-year fixed term
  • Start Date: September 2025 (or later by agreement)
  • Salary: Based on Finnish university system + personal performance component
